Gaby SortoSummer 2021 intern
Oneida County College Corps My Name is Gaby Sorto, and I am Salvadorian. I started interning at MVLA in June 2021. I am a Finance major at SUNY Polytechnic institute and was happy to hear I would be joining the MVLA team for the Summer through the Oneida County College Corps program. During my time at MVLA, I collaborated with Sonia and Maria on their projects and helped in the planning process of different activities that MVLA holds such as the Latino Summit and the Latino Festival. I helped updating the website to provide a clear outline of all the services we offer and as a way to connect clients with resources from the community. I had the privilege of working closely with Sonia and Maria and in the process, I had the chance to be introduced to various local community and statewide leaders. I am thankful to have been able to help out at MVLA and networking with leaders around the region.

Young Scholars LPP My name is Jack and I am interned at MVLA in the summer of 2021 before heading off to Amherst NY to study nursing at Daemen College. I am very excited to have been an intern there with the help of Young Scholars LPP. I enjoyed helping out with what I can around the office and supporting the Latino community while also building my resume. From the beginning at MVLA, I felt right at home and loved being involved with helping fellow Latinos with whatever help is needed. Being raised in a Hispanic household with our own struggles, and seeing how help is given without a price to those seeking it really opened my eyes to the impact that non-profit organizations like MVLA have in the community. By being there, I saw how many people request and receive help with things from finding a place to stay, getting food and clothes, to even legal help and referrals. I enjoyed my time there and I hope I left a good footprint in Utica.
