MVLA Gala Celebrates "Selena"
2015 MVLA Gala Event
Honoring our Heritage ~ Building our Future
The Mohawk Valley Latino Association is pleased to announce their 12th Annual Gala Fundraiser. The event will take place on: Friday, October 16, 2015, at The Stanley Theatre, 261 Genesee Street, Utica, NY, from 5:30 pm-11:00 pm.
This Gala is a formal occasion where members of the Latino community showcase ethnic foods, dancing and music. Entertainment will be provided by DeeJaay Richey, of Utica and the Ritmo Caribeño Dance Troop.
The honoree for the event will be OnPoint for College, a local non-profit organization that provides college access, college success and linkages to jobs for 700 Utica area lower income young people including Latinos, refugees, immigrants and inner city residents. OnPoint for College has partnered with MVLA to help Latino youth get into college and certificate programs, and to help them succeed and acquire good jobs. Working together, On Point for College and the MVLA are transforming lives and community.
During the Gala a film about the singer Selena Quintanilla will be shown in honor of the 20th anniversary of her untimely death. Called the “Queen of Tejano” music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the "top Latin artist of the '90s", the "best selling Latin artist of the decade". Local Proctor high school Senior, Genesis Almanzar, will be performing some of Salina’s best knowing songs.

Call for volunteers (opportunidades de ser voluntario)! If you or anyone you know are interested in rewarding volunteer opportunities, MVLA is the place for you. Some of our major events each year such as The Annual Latino Festival and Gala, can use a strong group of vibrant and creative thinking individuals who can work well in a team driven environment. You may volunteer on our Events committee for a single event or all if you wish! These exciting events will consist of an itinerary of fun filled entertainment for all ages and require diligent effort to make this all happen "flawlessly". Whether you have a lot or very little experience working on committees, we still value any ideas your are able to bring to the table. Committee work envolves general event planning, from setting up event venues, seeking artists and new ideas for entertainment and communicating with continuious and prospective donors.
